Ghana – South

Number of children enrolled in the 2021 - 2022 programme: 67 The capital Accra is located in the south of Ghana and is the largest city in the country, with a population of more than 4 million. It is known as an administrative, political and tourist centre. Busua is located west of the capital and is a popular seaside tourist destination that has attracted international and local tourists for many years. Regardless of tourism development, many families in and around the village face poverty and difficult living conditions. In the south of Ghana, we work with the local partner organization Embracing Hidden Talents Network (EHT) and its coordinator Ebenezer Parditey. Between 2007 and 2008, we built a library together in Busua with the help of a European project, contributions from Slovenian supporters and other individuals. This has become a popular gathering place for the surrounding children and young people who like to come there to study and spend their free time. When the need for space for medical activities became apparent in 2017, we, in cooperation with the local assembly, converted part of the library space into a clinic, which remains the only medical institution in the vicinity. Since 2017, we have also been supporting the Green Village project, carried out by our partner organization. The project consists of an organic vegetable garden, a fish farm and a centre for socializing and learning, built entirely out of recycled bottles. We included children from the support program in cultivating a vegetable garden, where they learned organic gardening and the importance of organic production. The children are also united in the Ecological Youth Club, which organizes additional lessons in ecology awareness and leisure activities.
